From Beloit, WI, Joey Hernandez is a member of the National Dance Association and artistic director of Resilience Dance Company (Rockford, IL) a pre-professional training program for Wisconsin and Illinois Stateline youth.
He began his training at Marx Dance Academy (Beloit, WI) in various styles of dance prior to attending Beloit College to study under the direction of Chris Johnson, Gina Tai, and Sarah Wolf. He graduated from Beloit with a B.A. in Dance and Health & Society. While there he performed and presented his choreography in the yearly December Workshops, Chelonia Concert, Senior Shows, and at the American College Dance Festival where in 2011 his solo piece “Closure,” was selected for the Gala Concert at the North Central Regional Conference. In addition, Joey is the only student to receive the annual Chavy Famiy endowed award for performance excellence twice (2009,2011) while attending Beloit. In 2011 he appeared in the role of “Tony” in the summer dance production of West Side Story (DeKalb, IL) with Beth Fowler Dance Company as well as performing at the Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival (Chicago, IL) as a member of Chelonia Dance Company. On scholarship Joey has studied with Inaside Chicago Dance, Urban Jamm Dance Convetion, and Dupree Dance Tour. This is all preceded by many other awards from regional and national dance competitions during his youth which includes regional solo titles and an appearance in Dancer Magazine in 2005 for,” the Future Star Award.”
In addition, Joey has been sharing his love of dance with local youth from the Northern IL, and Southern WI, communities for the past four years as a dance instructor and choreographer for Turning Pointe Dance Company (Roscoe, IL). Before extending his pedagogy to other regional studios such as Beth Fowler’s School of Dance (Genoa, IL and St. Charles, IL) and First Position Dance Studio (Janesville, WI). He has set pieces for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Beloit College’s student run dance company Repertory Dance Company. As well as contributed guest master classes and choreography for many dance studios and high school dance teams across Wisconsin and Illinois.
